Italy: Beautiful Varenna on Lake Como in Pictures
Varenna is the last stop of our Lake Como trip. Blondine and I were here last year in May. Because this is just a day trip from Milan, we elected to take a few stops only. If you are in Milan and would love a day outside the city, I suggest visiting Lake Como.
This is our route from Milan and click on the links to see the pictures:
- Milan to Como (Train in the morning which is half an hour ride with the intercity service to Switzerland - we had a quick stroll in Como town)
- Como to Bellagio (Ferry - we stayed for a few hours in Bellagio and had lunch here as well)
- Bellagio to Varenna (Ferry - we did a quick stroll in Varenna and then we had coffee here)
- Varenna to Milan (Train ride with a regional train which took more than an hour to Milan)
No need to book for the ferry in advance, you just buy the tickets on site in Como.
The train ticket from Milan to Como we bought at the Milan Central Station. The train ticket from Varenna to Milan we bought from the conductor in the train.
Italy’s countryside and lakes are stunning so we knew it was a good decision to get out of the city for a day. The weather was somehow on our side as well so that played a role in the success of this day trip. Lake Como and its beautiful lake villages though, I highly suggest, should be best enjoyed for a week. I may come back here another time, perhaps with the Dutchman if I can convince him. He is allergic to France and Italy and there is no known cure at the moment, however I am optimistic!
It’s best to come here in Lake Como during summer when its warm and more enjoyable to take a swim in the lake.
Blondine and I were able to see a lot of Varenna because we had gone astray looking for the train station. So we sought help from the locals who told us we were walking to the other direction.
The train station, which is called, ‘Varenna-Esino Perledo’ is located outside the centre across the river. Unfortunately, there was no facility to buy tickets at the train station when we were there. We bought the tickets on the train itself from the train conductor.

I wanted to create the actual route with the boat trip but Google Maps does not have the facility to do this. As you can see, Lake Como is not very far from Milan.

Varenna has lots of steps. To get to the main street you have to go up and follow one of the step pathways.
The weather was changing throughout the day, sun, some clouds, sun again, grey clouds, but luckily there was no rain.

Varenna is a cosy town with lots of cafe terraces on the waterfront but is less busy than popular Bellagio.
The Lake Como is a great place to just chill.
