A Nice Cup of Coffee at the Springhaver Theatre Cafe in Utrecht

Many years back, when Dutchman and I were much younger and in our 30’s, we would hit up Utrecht Centre for drinks in the weekends. I remember us going to certain bars where there is dancing and hard music going all night long and into the morning. Nowadays, going out after 22:00 is unthinkable for us. Reaching the mid to late 40’s is truly an awakening for us.

One thing we now know is that the only constant in life is change. Our tastes and desires will change in the years to come. They have for us.

Anyway, we went for coffee at this bar – terrace – cinema that we used to visit before: Springhaver Theatre Cafe. We usually come here before to watch a movie. Now this cinema is really special. It is small, quite unique and showcases peculiar and artistic movies, lots of which are European films from other European countries. They do run sometimes a few popular Hollywood films as well.

This place is a favourite hang out of locals who dabble in the art scene, are creative and have artistic hobbies and interests.

In the Netherlands, films in cinemas, as well as international shows on TV are not dubbed. They are shown as is but with Dutch subtitles. Perhaps, the Netherlands is one of the few countries in Europe that does not do dubbing.

I also love it that the theatre cafe is located in a quiet place in Utrecht, just right off Mariaplaats and across the back entrance of the chic Karel V Hotel and the Brasserie Maria Louisa. We initially checked out the brasserie but didn’t liked much the atmosphere of their outdoor garden terrace. I had high hopes as I have eaten here before but the underwhelming outdoor terrace proved to be a disappointment so we crossed the street and took a table at the Springhaver’s outdoor terrace.

A good decision!

The cool thing about Springhaver Theatre Cafe is they give you a free cookie and chocolate for your coffee =)

The name of the street is Springweg, just off Mariaplaats.

We sometimes go to Utrecht Centre with our bikes.

Springweg street, the cafe is further down the street.
