Must for every Foodie visiting London: Borough Market
Did you know that I went to heaven last March when I visited the Borough Market in London? *grin*
I mean I just adore and go crazy visiting food markets in Spain, Italy and France (these countries have the best markets in Europe in my humble opinion) but the Borough Market in London has one thing unique that you cannot find in other European markets. It’s the international variety of food she has on offer. In my travels, I have never ever seen such a wide-ranging market. The world’s cuisine under one roof! Each continent represented by several country cuisines in one market. That’s the Borough Market for you.
You might be aware of this already. London has been attracting a lot of emigrants, and these days asylum seekers from war-torn countries in Africa and the Middle East (have you read the recent news in the Calais border?). Read: the European Dream. Because of this, London has become so multicultural and this can be seen in the city’s neighbourhood make up, in the outdoor markets and the food. A Pakistani ex-colleague of mine (well he was born in the Netherlands from Pakistani parents) said that he has never been so at home in London than in Amsterdam. London is really a haven for immigrants especially from Middle Eastern backgrounds. So yeah, the Borough Market is one example of a once local market gone international.
The market is massive and sits under the railways of Southwark London. It is divided into wholesale and retail, although I think it is all a mishmash of everything. Tip: Do come here for brunch. Do not eat breakfast as you would need an empty stomach to carry on the tastings from stall to stall. The whole place is a one big eye candy. I am salivating! =)
Naturally food makes me happy and excited, and that can only mean that I could not stop clicking away with my pocket camera.
I tell you, the Borough Market in London could easily be the mecca for all foodie and food market enthusiasts. If you are a foodie, you cannot miss this place if you are visiting the city. Seriously.
Curious what I ate here? Go here for the entry I posted months back: Walking Lunch at the Borough Market - Egyptian Koshari, Raw Oyster, Sundried Tomato & Olive Breadstick and Prosecco
Enjoy the pictures. I don’t mind you drooling =)

The Borough Market is located in Southwark near the London Bridge and the Shard.
Location of the market on the map of London:
Just click the + and - signs to zoom in and out the location. The mearest tube is London Bridge.
Did you know that fudge is an American invention?
This is the Italian gourmet section.
French patisseries and gluten-free tarts and cupcakes.
Artisan foods. I love these kinds of breads.
A taste of the Balkans: Borek phyllo-based hearty pastry filled with minced meat, cheese or vegetables.
We are here at the Indian cuisine stand. From Gujarat offering vegetarian dishes. I wanted to try this one but there is a looooong queue (you could not see it in the photo).
We've got here some British steak pies.
Another Indian stand selling Indian style crepes, I think its called Masala Dosa.
These are Khanom Krok, they are small coconut pancakes.
Big German sausages on the grill here.
Turkish Delights for the sweet-toothed types.
Huge French Comte cheese wheels.
Something Swiss: Heating up the cheese wheel for some Raclette, and something Thai: cooking up Pad Thai noodles. There was a long line also for the Pad Thai.
I get really excited when I see fruits of different colours.
The market is located under the Southwark railway system in London.
Quite expensive hand dived scallops.
Vegetables make me excited as well! Those purple Brussel's sprouts are yummy. Cut them in two, heat the pan, grill them on it, add some salt, pepper and paprika then drizzel a bit of olive oil and voila! Great as a side dish.
Some Spanish paella here for you.
Moroccan and Middle Eastern flavours here.
Grilling some huge American burger patties.
Bottled juices from fruits and vegetables.
This set up just looks so yum. Confession time: I actually eat green asparagus raw. I just love its crunch and fresh tangy taste.
To give the dishes I make at home a little bit of hum, I tend to sprinkle chopped raw spring onions on top of the ready-to-be-served dish. They have somehow become a staple now in our kitchen.
The Shard is just a stone's throw away from the Borough Market.
