Red Wine Trail Hike (Germany): Marienthal to Dernau and back to Ahrweiler

This is a sequel to this post: Germany’s Red Wine Trail—The Hike from Ahrweiler to Marienthal

So yes, I had to cut my hike short because of a searing headache. Helaas. I tend to get this kind of reaction when I am exposed directly to the sun without any head covering. It really is too bad as I was in the mood and quite excited actually to hike the Red Wine Trail (rotweinwanderdeg) all the way to Altenahr.

One thing for sure, I would love to come back here again.

Perhaps with the Dutchman when we retire, and we can do the full hike from Sinzig to Altenahr. What’s nice about this destination is that it is really not that far from the Netherlands. It is just a 2.5 hour drive from Utrecht (3 hours from Amsterdam). Perfect for another long weekend getaway in the near future.

I hope I have inspired you to come and visit this beautiful piece of Deutschland.

Enjoy the pictures!

This is Dernau (wine) village.

This was in March, and a few weeks later the grapevines blossomed with green leaves.

The 35-kilometre Red Wine Trail is popular for joggers as well.

Stopping to smell, admire and photograph the flowers =)

The Arh Valley is the largest producer of Spatburgunder red wine (Pinot Noir).

The vineyards are on the plains and valleys of the Ahr as well.

Having the needed rest here.

These grapevines have their own names. They are perhaps the owners? Like donate and get your own grapevine kind of thing...

I am heading back to Ahrweiler and I have 5.3 kilometres to go.

Ahrweiler is just on the distance now.

One of my favourite pictures.

Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler in the distance.

The Calvarieberg Monastery in Ahrweiler.
