The Fish/Seafood Tavernas at Kateleios Bay in Kefalonia, Greece
When Dutchman and I are summer holidaying in the Greek Islands, which we tend to do now on a yearly basis, we always rent a scooter. We prefer the scooter with the car because it gives you a real summer holiday feeling being one with nature and the sea.
In Kefalonia we rented the scooter from this family owned business. The matriarch of the family was the main person handling the business. She was very nice to us and Dutchman made a good deal. She asked us where we are going with the scooter and we told her—everywhere, even up to the north! She laughed and said that not many holidaymakers go that far. Many tend to just stick in the nearby areas and visit the capital.
She then told us about a place where we should go for dinner. The Kateleios Bay or Kato Kateleios (also spelled as Katelios) just before reaching Skala, the big beach resort in the south eastern most part of the island. She said the tavernas here are fish-seafood tavernas offering their freshest catch of the day. It is where she and her family goes to when they want to eat out. Because she knows that we are going to Skala, she added that Skala is touristy and it’s good for the beach but it’s better to eat at Kateleios. Better food, better tavernas and better ambiance. The locals go there, not just the tourists, she says. OK—we are sold!
So on the road to Skala beach for the afternoon we decided to drop by quickly to survey Kateleios Bay. Indeed the beach bay is filled with alfresco restaurants. Dinner on the beach is the theme here and every taverna has a fresh catch seafood showcase display. The ambiance of this place is very nice and cosy.
We liked what we saw so Dutchman and I made a decision to have dinner here after we are done beaching in Skala. For now, here are the pictures of Kateleios Bay and the tavernas. I will post our dinner pictures after.
