Kefalonia, Greece: The (Scooter) Route with Many Churches
Dutchman and I just love our scooter rides whenever we are summer holidaying in the Greek Islands. We have not picked an island for the summer yet but I am already brimming with excitement!
So I, being the travel expert between us two, normally study the map, do some basic online research and then I lay out the plan for our summer beach island holiday. We normally go for a 2-week summer holiday. The Greek Islands have been our summer destination for years already. It has almost become a tradition.
The thing with the Greek Islands is that, there are just not enough information available out on the web to lean on. This is one of the reasons as well why I am writing my experiences in this blog, so I can share it to those who needed them. Well let me correct that, there are actually information available online, but mostly only for the popular Greek Islands, which some of them we have already been to.
Now given the nature that we always go to a new island every summer, we always face the unknown. Which we both like actually =)
So for this particular day in Kefalonia, we chose the route going to Poros. We want to check out the place, perhaps spend an afternoon here on the beach.
This route is quite nice and very green. Because we summer holiday every year in the Greek Islands, we are quite familiar of its typical island topography. But that does not say that each island is more or less the same. No! Each island offers every time a different landscape and experience.
With this route we noticed so many churches along the road. Perhaps they are called chapels as they are smaller? The churches are quite simple in design yet colourful to the eyes. They looked very well maintained as well which had us wondering, begging this question to be answered:
Do the locals actually make use of these churches? Like every week? Or during special days and ocassions only?
The island of Kefalonia does not have a lot of inhabitants. Most of them also prefer living near the city or in a bigger town. This route to Poros is a less inhabited area. There are not many houses here. It is the summer season and we barely saw cars and motorcycles on the road.
Hmm... OK, I get it. People always have a distinct need to build a place of worship. We have read it in the ancient times. We have seen it today. We however do not know what the future holds.
On the positive side, this is what makes the Greek Islands very traditional. It follows and sticks to its own culture, and I quite like that.

Would you live here? That house by the way is unfinished. These houses have become random and typical sights in the islands. I am sure there is a story behind it.
They do have charming churches here in Kefalonia.
We saw this eagle monument along the road. It could have represented people who have died here for a cause because we saw names in Greek with corresponding ages on the placque.
