Bologna Eats: Salami, Cheese and Pickles for Dinner at Simoni
Ah, this is my first eat in Bologna...
The original plan was to actually start with the aperitivo hour and then have my Emilia-Romagna dinner. I was eyeing the salumerias at Via Pescherie Vecchie in Quadrilatero for my aperitivo plan, although many osterias, trattorias and enotecas (all different types of eating and drinking places according to the Italians) in the city offer the aperitivo hour.
The aperitivo culture in northern Italy is widespread in the cities. You basically buy a glass of alcoholic beverage for a much higher price than normal (starts at 5 Euros++) and you get nibbles with it, Italian style of course. The casual places offer it as buffet, while the more formal ones will give you a plate of assorted bites.
I initially wanted to check out Osteria del Sole for a drink but the place was too busy with people standing outside on the street so it wasn’t an option for me. I lingered a bit in Quadrilatero and spotted a just vacated table in Simoni and quickly grabbed it.
In hindsight, Simoni was a much better choice considering that the place is a salumeria. My stomach started growling seeing all the hanging ham legs so I scanned the menu and zeroed in to the tempting selection of salamis. I gave in and ordered a royal plate of salami, cheeses and pickles to pair up with my Sangiovese red wine.
You know, I was just going with the flow. If I still have some space left in my stomach, then I will have dinner after.
Well I finished the whole gratifying plate of salumi, formaggi and sottoli. Wiped everything clean up to the last crumb and licked the last drop of my Sangiovese. Delicious. I couldn’t be more than happier on my first evening in Bologna =)
Unfortunately I was already very full so the dinner option is a no go. But a cup of coffee? Well definitely yes. Time to search for a coffee bar.

My aperitivo that became my dinner =)
I ordered the Sangiovese Rubicone IGT red wine. I love Valpolicella as well but the wait staff told me the Sangiovese is very good.
My order is the Tagliere Royale di Salumi e Formaggi which is a selection of meats that includes mortadella which used to be a very expensive cold cut in the Middle Ages. Parmegiano Reggiano (parmesan cheese) is eaten with the (Modena) balsamico.
The bread was delicious, it had some bits of meat in it.
The salumis made in the Emilia-Romagna region. Simoni is first and foremost a salumeria shop but it also offers a casual dining seating. It is busy here in the evening.
Simoni is located on Via Pescherie Vecchie, just off Piazza Maggiore.
