North Hatley, Canada: I stayed at Serendipity B&B
In charismatic and small villages such as North Hatley in the Eastern Townships of Canada, the best accommodation there is are Bed & Breakfasts (B&B) in traditional Victorian houses run by local villagers.
In North Hatley I stayed at the Serendipity B&B (also known as Serendipity Gite – French for B&B type of accommodation) located on Lake Massawippi just across the famous charming wooden pier with a kiosk, the symbol of the village.
The man I met on my first day in North Hatley who was fishing at this small pier told me that the owner of the Serendipity B&B is the best there is in town in recreational fishing. He said he has won many awards and I can tell that from the many preserved trophy fishes hanging on his wall.
The fact is, the day I arrived at the B&B I can’t help but notice the colourful wall. There were small fishes and others were exemplarily huge. I didn’t take a picture of the famed wall since the room is somewhat a private section between the public areas of the house. But I remember commenting about the trophy fishes, call it an act of surprise, and the host responded proudly that he caught them all. Impressive. The B&B I believe offers fishing activities as well.
The B&B has 3 rooms and they gave me the “Jardin Room” which has a view of the back garden. I quite like the blue and white colour scheme of the bedroom. The bed linen prints matched well with the lamps. My big private bathroom was just across the room as well. I slept well in this room and I love having many pillows in bed.
Breakfast was served at the nice breakfast room with a view to the lake, pier and the main intersection of the village. I am sure during warmer months the host opens the French window doors to the front balcony. Croissants, an omelette and yoghurt with fruits were served together with my black tea and orange juice. This was more than enough that I could handle until my late lunch.
I met a local Canadian tourist who was sitting across the table waiting for his wife to get finished upstairs. He said that he always waits for her. Don’t all men do? Hehe.
While waiting for his wife, we had a really nice and engaging, rather, interesting light conversation. A conversation that made me realise the not-so-obvious-fact to the outside world that Canadians do not really have a lot in common with the Americans, other than being neighbours. He looks forward though to visiting Asia and Europe one day, especially France.

Where is the B&B on the map?
Right in the middle of the village, on the main road, Chemin de la Riviere and on Lake Massawippi. You can easily park on the road across the street.
