Netherlands: Pictures of the Capital of Drenthe - Assen

I just want to share some nice pictures I took last March when I visited Assen, the capital of Drenthe, one of the 12 provinces in the Netherlands located in the northeastern part of the country.

Luck was with me during my visit because the weather was nice. Not so cold and clear blue skies. This rarely happens in wet, humid, windy and cold Netherlands. Well yes it does, but only a few times in a year =)

That is why when it is good weather here we make the best out of it. We go out!

De Vaart is where the water canal ends when reaching  the city centre of Assen. This is located right across the Markt.

Assen is quite up north in the country, in the east near the border to Germany.

This very cool Fellini restaurant is part glass house. I wanted to eat here but it was fully booked and I did not have a reservation. I ate instead at Restaurant Touche on the Markt.

Pancake boat restaurant. I think every main city in the Netherlands has one. I have found some of them even sailing to Germany on the River Rhine.

This is the Nieuwe Kolk, a modern theater, cinema and public library of the city. Underground is a public pay parking garage where I parked the car.

De Markt - the central market square of the city. It is not that big but this is where many people hang out. There are lots of cafe terraces and restaurants in the square.

Having a chilled Rose wine at the Koppelpaarden Cafe on the Markt. Perfect for a blue skies day.

A church called Josefkerk.

The zaterdagmarkt (Saturday Market) in Assen. Stroopwafels are pressed caramel waffles and are typically Dutch.

This is the Drents Museum, an art and history museum. When I was there last March, they featured the history and art collection of the Mayas.

The Brink of the Drents Museum is blooming with tulips.

At the back of the kloosterkerk (monastery church) near the Drents Museum. Bartje Bartles is a character in a series of Dutch books by Anne de Vries.
