San Marino: Lunch + People Watching on the Beautiful Piazza della Liberta
A large part of my travelling agenda revolves around chilling out in nice and cool places with food, booze and a beautiful view. They are basically my travelling highlights.
I just can’t help it. I love the good life (who does not?!) and I make it happen. Which is the reason why I can’t stop working fulltime at the moment because I need to finance this lifestyle (not cheap), as well as save for my looming early retirement (hallelujah, my new ambition!). I am 46 so the subject of retirement dominates my thoughts these days.
So I spend a lot of time researching about cafes, bars, restaurants and lounges of my travel destinations – that is, when I am not being lazy or being dumped with last-minute stuff at work which always happens by the way. I then come up with a list. Although I am a strong advocate for spontaneity, which can come handy at certain times, it doesn’t really hurt as well if you could use some little help, like some preparation.
In San Marino I didn’t do a lot of research though because the place is so tiny. I thought I will just wing it. For sure I will eat at the famous squares because these places are guaranteed hotspots when it comes to watching live the goings-on of a particular area. Basically chilling out whilst people watching, which I must admit is an all-time favourite pastime of mine =)
So after having seen quite a bit of San Marino, I went back to Piazza della Liberta, the main square and the centre of life of the city. I am having my late lunch here at Ristorante Righi.
Piazza della Liberta is one of the great places in San Marino to sit down and relax and enjoy the surroundings with a glass of wine. The restaurant is strategically located in the middle of the square and has a lovely outdoor terrace. The view could not have been more enchanting. From my table I am looking straight to the fountain and the busy activity on the square. To the right is the City Hall (Palazzo Pubblico) and far ahead to the left is a San Marino guard dressed in the bright colours of Christmas. Pointsettias comes to mind. There’s lots to see!
Earlier during the day I had some melons with Parma ham which I devoured with gusto. Here at Ristorante Righi I ordered some baked fish covered with spices and bread crumbs. For my wine, I think I had a Moscato. This was a really nice and relaxing lunch that I enjoyed very much.
In places like this I usually budget 1 to 1.5 hours activity of eating, drinking and just pure chilling out. This is also a regroup tactic of mine so I can revisit my little black book where I have places to see, do or experience listed.
So sitting here makes me happy. This is what travelling is all about for me, well, at least partly.

The Palazzo Pubblico, the San Marino City Hall as the main view.
Piazza della Liberta is the heart of San Marino.
The Palazzo Pubblico was built in the late 1800's.
Lunch at the outdoor terrace of Ristorante Righi. There was a black old Fiat car with a basket full of bright red and pink flowers on top in the middle of the square.
The San Marino guard in very Christmassy colours =)
