Utrecht, Netherlands: The ‘Swan Market’ on Vredenburg, Utrecht Centrum
There’s no lying, I am a big fan of markets and with this I mean special lifestyle outdoor markets, farmer’s markets and food markets. This is the 103rd market post so to speak. Yes, I am really a big fan =)
Last summer in June and on a weekend, I was at home and it was my birthday. I like to keep my birthdays low profile and do not talk openly about it with friends and family on social media. There were also lots of things going on in my mind about work. I was supposed to invite family over the weekend for lunch, tea or dinner but I called for a raincheck instead. I needed to de-stress. So I told the Dutchman that I am going for a walk in Utrecht centrum, alone.
In the past shops were closed during Sundays in the Netherlands. But these days, Sundays are business as usual in the main cities in the country. In Christian conservative towns and villages, Sundays though are still observed as a rest day.
When I arrived in the centre, I was surprised to see a lively market on Vredenburg. The usual outdoor market on this square is on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, but surely not Sundays. Upon a closer inspection of the vendors and the whole market set up (there are food trucks!) I have come to the conclusion that this is some special kind of market that does not happen every week or every month!
I was elated of course! My de-stressing regimen has just been unlocked, haha. It is just too bad that I have already eaten. But no problem, my camera hasn’t. She is going to take loads of picture snacking, er I mean snapping.
When I got back home later in the afternoon I googled the event and found out that it is the ‘Swan Market’ – some kind of lifestyle market promoted in the Netherlands and Belgium, and a platform for new entrepreneurs to showcase their products. From fashion, vintage items, design, interior decors, food trucks, art, jewellery and to live music and fun. Sounds very cool. I am all for supporting local small businesses.
Art and design are definitely part of my system but I have been trying to adapt the less is more mantra so I try to appreciate outstanding pieces from a distance without having to buy them. Food trucks though is right under my alley!

A new boom for fashion trucks?
I am in heaven when I am visiting markets like this one. My camera as well, haha.
Pretty vintage style decors that I love to appreciate and take pictures of but never buy. Mainly because my home is in black, grey, silver and creme colour scheme. The only real colour is green from my bonsai plant and 2 fake ball greens.
I treated myself to a tornado potato chip in barbecue flavour.
There is some serious slow barbecuing here as well.
World kitchen: From England's Fish n Chips to Thailand's Tom Yum Soup. I wasn't hungry at all when I was here otherwise I would have tried those Thai Summer Shrimp Rolls.
