Mosel, Germany: Pictures of Burg Eltz nearby Muden Village
10 years ago I did my first solo road trip in Europe outside the Netherlands. I knew exactly what I wanted. I want to start with short and nearby solo road trips. But what really funneled this first road trip project was a combination of curiosity, restlessness and desire to see the world and a picture I saw somewhere of the Mosel river valley in Germany.
The Mosel river valley is where the famous German white wine – Reisling is cultivated. It is one of the most beautiful places I have ever been to. I would love to come back!
So this was year 2006, on my 4th year of living in the Netherlands. I have done solo travels to cities in the country and nearby Belgium, travelled with the Dutchman as well but never on my own for pleasure. I was busy with my career. Learning the Dutch language, as well as trying to get my driving license because my Philippine one is not valid here. It wasn’t an easy walk in the park to erect my career and the status I once enjoyed, back to where it was in a non-English speaking country. I was back to zero in my early 30’s. That was a big slap on my face; a very bitter pill to swallow that haunted me with sleepless nights. In the first 3 years I struggled a LOT because I am a proud person who had previous successes in her career. This was a very painful part of my journey to integration, working and social life adaptation in the Netherlands, so you can say that my focus lay somewhere else than travelling.
Travelling though has always been a desire, a dormant desire that was just waiting to be awakened and fulfilled each time. But I knew I needed to find my inner peace and a place for myself first in society. Come 2006 and I was ready to explore the world! =)
My blog also existed already as an expat blog which went through stages as well. I am really glad that I have documented my travels because I enjoy going back and reading them and looking at pictures. It always give me a smile on my lips.
I blogged about my travels in the past differently. I wrote long (winded) stories, summarising the whole travel episode and only posting a few pictures whilst giving a link to my Multiply album for the rest of the pictures. Multiply sadly decided to scale down their business and didn’t offer the hosting service anymore, which is the reason why my old entries still have missing pictures. Updating the photos has taken me YEARS and I am still in the process so to speak.
I now blog differently though. I do micro-blogging which means I blog based on a subject and activity. This is much more manageable and sustainable since my goal is to blog daily. I also do not write long posts anymore, and I focus more on posting pictures. Pictures tell a thousand words you know.
So I am posting the pictures of this Harry Potter fairy tale-like ancient castle called Burg Eltz located in the middle of the woods of Muden in the Mosel, which did not make it to the cut of my old blog entry.

I chose the forest trail to walk to the castle which took me almost an hour (approximately 2 hours including going back) on my own. This was one of my silly neophyte travelling faux pas of walking alone in the forest. My goodness, every time I am reminded of this, I always have a fit laughing about it. Stupid, super silly me.
This is the route I took, from Der Osterhof where you can park the car and walk through the forest to Burg Eltz:

Burg Eltz is a Harry Potter fairy tale-like ancient castle in the woods of Muden in the Mosel River Valley of Germany.

It says it will only take half an hour, but in real life it will take longer because there are no real paths so you are constantly searching for directions and will get lost a bit. Then you have to walk slow as well because of the rocky, muddy and earthy terrain. It gets dark in the forest even if there is daylight!

The rain did stopped, but the damage has been done, the outdoor cafe terrace of the castle is wet.

Moselkern is going to the train station with normal paths. The wooden sign Muden is the trail (w/o paths) going via the forest. This is the trail I took.
