Bologna, Italy: Coffee, People and Palazzo Watching at Piazza Maggiore
If there is one thing I would strongly suggest doing when visiting Bologna, then that would be having coffee and people watching at Piazza Maggiore.
And the best place to people watch on Piazza Maggiore would be from the cafe called Bar La Linea located in Palazzo Re Enzo on the corner of the Piazza e Fontana del Nettuno (Neptune Fountain and Plaza). The bar cafe is facing the commanding Basilica di San Petronio. It could not have been more central that this, especially when its great weather and you are seated outside, you just have a great vantage point, not only to people watch but also to basilica and palazzo watch! Yeah, Piazza Maggiore is ringed with beautiful palazzo buildings.
And so it is that I love sitting at cafes and people watching. This has become an addicting habit of mine really. Basically, just bumming around and watching the whole world go by before me. No pressure at all. The activity relaxes me a lot and is definitely one of my enjoyable moments during my travels. It is therapeutic. I mean, I look forward to this!
So here at Piazza Maggiore, do order your cappuccino for breakfast or have a cafe anytime of the day. Just do not expect great customer service here though. Because of its location, it can get busy and the waiters can therefore be very slow. I became impatient and went inside to pay directly to the cashier because the waiters were too busy not seeing my direction.
If you live in Europe, you will somewhat become accustomed with the poor to bad customer service phenomenon. The realities in this continent, helaas.
Speaking of the basilica, I was able to go inside, but in order to further explore the church and take pictures, you will need to pay. I find that really odd, and thought the ruling is executed in bad taste, so I stepped out. I was able to take a picture though before the church personnel tapped my shoulder and pointed at the PAY sign. The interior is really nothing special, except that it is humongous. Honestly, the facade is prettier and more interesting.
The first stone of construction of this church was laid in the year of 1390. This means that this is a very old church.
If you come to Bologna, do not miss hanging out here in Piazza Maggiore, even for just an hour.
