Vietnam: Arriving Ho Chi Minh City and Plane Views

We pretty much had luck and managed to duck the typhoon in the Philippines (complete story soon!) and arrived on time in Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) in Vietnam.

Here are a few plane views of the city that I was able to shoot before touching down.

The airport is not too far away from the city center.

Outside of the airport is full of people waiting for their relatives.


SisterJ with all our luggage =). We flew with PAL (Philippine Airlines) and their minimum baggage allowance per person is 30 kilos.


The parents just landed in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. We always get priority when we travel with them, those walking sticks can really do wonders. 


If you need a taxi just walk outside the airport and go here. Prices to the city centre range between 140,000 - 180,000 VND. There will be taxi hawkers who will try to give you a special price, say no and speak directly to the taxi chauffeur and say meter please.

Bangkok, Thailand: The Story Behind the Impressive Serpent Statue at Suvarnabhumi Bangkok International Airport

If you fly out from the new Bangkok ‘Suvarnabhumi’ International Airport, the huge, colourful and impressive mythical statue popular in Thai and Indian culture, the 3-headed serpent Naga (his name Vasuki) in a spectacular tug-of-war scene with its mid-section body wrapped around a stone, which is actually a mountain, and Vishnu one of the supreme deities in Hindu is sitting on top, will greet you as you finish immigration and step inside the airport’s duty free shopping area. You just have to stop and be dazzled by it. The whole installation is impressive and as I took pictures I wondered what the story is behind this scene. Shanghai’s 5-Kilometer “Nanjing Road” is World’s Longest Shopping Street

For the traveller or tourist who is keen to shop and engage in the modern Shanghainese shopping lifestyle experience, the answer is a visit to Nanjing Road. I suggest multiple visits since this shopping street is 5-kilometers long! Shopping during travelling does not sit high up on my list. I do buy stuff but they are mostly a by-product of my travel activities. I do not travel to shop nor is it a travel activity. But I am always curious about shopping streets in large cities. I want to see what it looks like, what kind of stores they have, what products offer, perhaps there is a café on the corner street that I can sit and have a drink whilst I watch people go about with their shopping?
