Most Beautiful Dairy Shop in the World: Pfunds Molkerei in Dresden
Although this place can be a chock-full of tourists, this gorgeous dairy shop is a truly gem and really worthy of visiting.
It's the Dresdner Molkerei Gebruder Pfund or Pfund's Molkerei, a dairy shop turned into a major tourist attraction in Dresden, Germany. I can't blame the owner for overly exposing the shop to mass tourism because this shop is truly a beautiful place, a lovely piece of historical art and architecture. And of course, the owner'ss got to earn their keep as well.
The milk shop is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records in 1998 as the -- Most beautiful dairy shop in the world. I really believe it is.
Pfunds Molkerei is located in Outer Neustadt which is outside the old town center across the Elbe River. We were staying in the Inner Neustadt, which is not too far away from the dairy shop, so after we were done with our window shopping on the Hauptstrasse (this is a nice boulevard!), we moved on to the next item on our agenda. Visit the Pfunds Molkerei and have coffee and tea there as well.

We were greeted by a busload of excited tourists on tour when we arrived. It was a major turn off of course, but that didn't deter us. We were here to see the beautiful shop. Upon entering we quickly noticed the "No Photos" sign which only dampened my mood. So I kept my camera at bay, but then I noticed other people ignoring the sign and taking photos. What the heck? Should I or should I not?
Well, I was being cheeky. I broke the rule and stole a few pictures. Did I feel guilty? You bet I sure did! But I found it really odd and silly for the owner to restrict picture taking. It's like telling the water to stop flowing down the stream.
But, this milk shop is indeed very beautiful.
The walls and ceilings are made of hand-painted tiles by Villeroy & Boch depicting farm scenes, the daily life, and nirvana. There are cows and barns, but so are garlands, draperies, scrolls, and chubby cherubs. It is very Renaissance and Belle Epoque-ish.

The shop offers cheese tasting with a glass of milk, liquor or Saxony wine. Because of its popularity, the shop sells a lot of souvenirs which are super touristy items such as magnets, soaps, shopping bags and more. Bubbles bought some souvenir items and I can't help but admire their paper shopping bag.
We were informed that there is a cafe restaurant upstairs so we went up to have coffee and tea. The cafe restaurant was nothing like the extravagant shop below. I was really expecting a luxurious cafe that complements the most beautiful dairy shop in the world, but helaas, it's just another cafe, and a bit on the shabby side if I may add. The ambiance made me go back to the then-communist East Germany, pre-1989. I am just being honest about my impressions, OK.
We further checked the menu and were offered an assortment of cakes. We settled for the cheesecake to share which we thought was quite nice. It was very rich and creamy.
I also learned that the dairy shop was featured in the film, "The Grand Budapest Hotel" and because of this many movie fans come here to see the shop in real life as well. I heard good reviews of this film, so I might watch soon.
All in all, I highly recommend visiting this place if you are into history, art, and architecture and you don't mind the place being super touristy.
