Dresden: German Cuisine at Kuppel Restaurant in der Yenidze
The first dinner in Dresden was at this mosque-like restaurant...
But the building wasn't really a mosque at all but a cigarette factory in the past and is now an office building. The Yenidze is one of the iconic buildings that grace the skyline of Dresden.
Yenidze building was built in 1907 as a cigarette factory owned by a Jewish entrepreneur who imported tobacco from the Ottoman Empire in a place called Yenidze (which is Thrace is now modern-day Greece). It is by no means a mosque, although resembling like one. The exotic oriental style of the building depicts where the tobacco it produces and markets came from. The minarets are actually chimneys.
The building is now an office building and a restaurant called Kuppel Restaurant offering typical German cuisine. Kuppel means the dome because the restaurant is located at the top with access to the dome/cupola.
There is an outdoor terrace as well which functions as a biergarten (beer garden) during late spring, summer and early autumn. We were there in early spring, and although they have prepared the terrace it wasn't open yet. It was still cold to be sitting outdoors.
I found this restaurant online whilst searching for places to eat in Dresden. I may have found them on Tripadvisor. Helaas, I cannot control myself, I am always on the lookout for out of the ordinary places and this restaurant was surely a special one considering its history and architecture. Perhaps the most unique restaurant in Dresden!
The restaurant wasn't also very far from the hotel we stayed at and was very doable within a few minutes walk. We took the somewhat outdated lift to the top of the building. Not knowing if the restaurant is that popular, I didn't take any chances and made a reservation ahead of time. Luckily I did because the restaurant was full when we arrived.
We were quickly led to our table which has a view of the city. The windows are not huge per se but the tables are on the window side. In fact, all tables have a window. The restaurant is designed following the circle form of the dome wherein the middle part acts as the space for the lift and stairwell.
The Kuppel Restaurant specialises in German cuisine, which isn't really my favourite to be honest, but when I am in Germany, I try to eat what the country has to offer. I, therefore, go local. It helps me appreciate the country better and makes my travel experience in this sense more fulfilling I guess.
So fair enough, we ordered German meat fares. The menu wasn't that extensive so within a few minutes we managed to pick a choice.
I had a Schnitzel in Viennese style with fried potatoes and a side salad (Schnitzel vom Schwein nach Wiener Art mit Bratkartoffeln und kleiner Salatbeilage).
Bubbles, on the other hand, treated herself to an oven roasted pork in prune sauce with steamed potatoes and red cabbage (Tranchen vom ofenfrischen Schweinebraten an deftiger Backpflaumensauce, dazu reichen wir Blaukraut und Dampfkartoffeln).
Both dishes are quite heavy! We didn't get to finish them all.
The presentation of the dishes was traditionally done but I can't say this was our best meal of the trip. The dinner was nothing extraordinary but this was not bad as well. Just okay I guess. We did enjoy the views as we could see from our table in the distance the Dresden Old Town skyline.
I would have to say that this would be a great place to have a drink on the outdoor terrace when it is open for warmer days.

Of course, we start with some real German booze, a Krombacher Pils (pilsen) and a Kostritzer Schwarbier (black lager).

German meals are heavy on the meat and carbohydrates (potato). I would grow wide in a week's time if I eat this every day.
