Figueres: The City of Figs and Hometown of Dali

Figueres is located north of Girona in its same namesake province. I came here with my cute rental car from Girona and parked right under this huge open marketplace (it was empty when I was there) with a roof on streets Carrer Rutlla corner Carrer Blanc which is just a block away to the La Rambla. Perfect.

There used to be a lot of fig trees in this area hence the name Figueres which means figs in Catalan (Higueres in Spanish). I am not sure if there are still many fig trees here but what I do sure know is that I adore figs to bits! They are great pairings for finger food such as cheese, salami, jam and of course red wine.

The town is also the birthplace of surrealist painter, Salvador Dali.

I managed to have my late breakfast here before hitting the street scene of Figueres and visiting the out-of-this-world Dali Museum.

The town is very popular for one-day side trips from cities Barcelona and Girona, as well as from the Costa Brava (beach area). The main attraction why people come here is none other than Dali's Theatre Museum. During the summer the city can be packed with visitors on a day trip agenda. But before I post about my experience visiting the museum, I would like to show you the city centre. It is compact, old & historical, cosy as well as nice.

I had my breakfast here at Fabrega on Carrer Rutlla. Right across this cafe bakery is the underground parking where I parked the car.

The La Rambla of Figueres, where everyone gathers.

The old and the young alike come together here at the La Rambla. It is also a nicely shaded park and walkway. It is the heart of Figueres.

Figueres has a compact little old centre with narrow alleys filled with shops, cafes and restaurants.

This is the Placa de les Patates, a lovely square filled with outdoor terraces. A great place to hang out and order a chilled sangria.

Huh. Is that Russian language? Can you spot Dali in the picture? The city centre is filled with replica works of Dali scattered all over the place.

Next is Dali's one-of-a-kind somewhat kooky museum =)
