Les Carroz Ski Village from the Slopes of Grand Massif (French Alps)
Just a few pictures of Les Carroz village in the French Alps for this blog entry.
Les Carroz is one of the 5 villages in the Grand Massif ski area in the French Alps. Dutchman and I skied here from Flaine and I took a little break in one of the terraces, at the K Alpine Lounge Restaurant whilst Dutchman went for another (off) slope run.
The village is situated on a plateau at 1140m above sea level and is facing Mont Blanc. Unlike Flaine, the houses here are traditional, in wooden chalet Haute Savoyard style which is typical in the alpine mountains.
It is not a ski village purposely built for wintersport holiday. It is an alpine village to begin with. Les Carroz has been here all the time, but it has evolved and has transformed through the years, catering these days to tourism, in particular wintersport. The village has its own unique and elegant charm, and I can understand why people prefer to stay here for their skiing holiday.
It is also the nearest village to the highway, and was the first village we encountered when driving up the zigzagged mountain road to Flaine. We installed the snow chains on the car after passing Les Carroz, so no need for snow chains to get here unless of course if it is snowing very hard.

Les Carroz from the slopes. Can you see the thin layer of cloud hanging above the village? Quite dramatic, the clouds stayed like that the whole time, trapped in the valley.
No concrete Bauhaus-style buildings here like in Flaine.
Haute Savoyard inspired houses characterises the village landscape of Les Carroz.
