Eastern Townships (Quebec), Canada: Magog Impressions

After having a hearty breakfast and settling my bill at the charming B&B I stayed at in North Hatley, I hit the road once again, this time to the direction of Montreal. I am flying back to Amsterdan in the evening but I still have a whole day to spare.

Montreal is just 1.5 hours away from the Eastern Townships and it is still early so I will be dropping by at 2 places, Magog and Saint Benoit du Lac, which luckily are both located along the route.

I love road trips and one of the things I enjoy when planning a road trip holiday is figuring out the lovely towns and villages along the route that I can stop by for a a short sightseeing and a drink. I mean this is what road trips are all about right? Not driving non-stop for hours, but discovering places as you drive along.

On the map is the distance between North Hatley and Magog:

Compared to North Hatley which is a village, Magog is more of a small town with a pretty busy thoroughfare adorned with colourful retail shops. The main street is the heart of the town and it seems that everything happens here.

I could not find a suitable parking on the main street and after a few turns I saw a huge somewhat private parking lot nearby. I was not sure if I was allowed to park in there. The parking signs were a bit confusing, some parking spaces have a do not park sign, so I stopped the car in a parking space without a sign. I reasoned out in my head that this is a small place in humongous Canada, and I do not think the government has enough resources to be employing someone fulltime to give away parking tickets in a small town in the Eastern Townships. But who knows? I took the risk anyway and parked.

My idea was to have some coffee somewhere in a nice cafe but that would really depend on how things roll. I like to inject a little bit of spontaneity sometimes in my travels. I will deal with things when they come, when I am there.

However I could not really find an interesting place to have a drink on Rue Principale, the main thoroughfare of Magog. I was looking for a bar or cafe with an atmospheric outdoor terrace and there was none. Helaas. You cannot have them all, huh.

Sometimes you don’t find anything worthy to give more of your time, so having said that, I decided to go back to the car. Off to my next stop before I reach Montreal =)

On the road to Magog from North Hatley. The locals say the trees would have been fiery red or golden yellow by now but autumn came a bit late in Canada last year.

Arriving here in the centre of Magog which really is the main street - Rue Principale.

Walking here on Rue Principale, the main street of Magog where everything happens.

The River Magog which flows to Lake Magog (east) and to the Bay of Magog (west).

This is just outside the centre of Magog.
