3 Indoor Food & Farmer's Markets of Bologna, Italy

For a small city as Bologna, it has quite an impressive number of food markets going. It really is no wonder if you just look closely into the DNA of this capital city of the Emilia-Romagna region, because Bologna, nicknamed as La Grassa (The Fat One) is the food capital of Italy.

This city is literally oozing with lots of delicious fat!

And aside from the daily outdoor market at the Quadrilatero (read: The Quadrilatero Market), which by the way is the oldest market, there are 3 other indoor food and farmer's markets in the city visitors should know about, especially if you are a foodie traveller.

1. Mercato di Mezzo
Location: Via Draperie and Via Clavature in Quadrilatero
Opening times: Daily until midnight

I visited this market on the first day I was in Bologna, early in the evening when I was getting my bearings around the city. I discovered the market on a corner of the side alleys from Piazza Maggiore where you will find a lot of salumeria and aperitivo bars in the evening. In the morning this area is the Quadrilatero Market, the oldest outdoor market in the city.

It was quite busy when I was here at Mercato di Mezzo. On the first floor, you will find more seating area and a pizzeria. This market is predominantly a food market. And although I was tempted, I refrained from eating here because I was distracted by the exquisite and tasty-looking hanging ham legs at Simoni. They were literally flaunting, the loaded with fat, legs at me!

Located just right off Piazza Maggiore. I followed Via Pescherie Vecchie and ended up at Via Draperie where I bumped into the food market.

2. Mercato della Terra
Location: Piazzetta Pasolini and Piazetta Anna Magnani
Opening times: Every Saturday 09:00 - 14:00 and Monday evenings in the summer

The Slow Food farmer's market of Bologna is only open every Saturdays. I never made it to here. Helaas. This is a great market to meet local farmers in the area and food artisans.

Do take note that it is open on Monday evenings during summertime. Not sure why they chose Mondays instead of a different day?

3. Mercato delle Erbe
Location: Via Ugo Bassi
Opening times: Daily until midnight

This market is both a food and farmer's market and I was able to take a few pictures during my visit. The food market area is called Altro? (yes with a question mark), a busy one and where I had a lovely vegetarian lunch which I will post in my next blog entry.

If you are a foodie, this market is a must visit in my opinion!

You can also enter the market on Via S. Gervasio and Via Belvedere.
