A Quick Stopover at Poros Beach Resort in Cephallonia, Greece
When Dutchman and I arrive in a new town or village, we normally take a survey tour of the area first before parking our rental scooter. This way we have a good idea of the place and we know where the best parts are. So that is a tip by the way =)
In Poros we noticed that the beach town resort has seen better days, unfortunately. Some of the buildings were rundown and unoccupied giving a feeling that a part of the resort is a ghost town. These buildings could have easily been shops, cafes, restaurants and travel tour agencies in the past. Perhaps the town invested too much too soon on tourism, on hospitality infrastructure that was not sustainable in the long term. I could really see this place as a lovely resort area if managed well.
The village centre however is quite compact and is located just below the rock cliffs. The square has enough cafes and restaurants with a cosy outdoor terrace activity in the middle. The promenade looks very well maintained and clean with enough benches for people to sit on and enjoy the view of passing boats and ships.
To the left of the village are the long stretch of white shingle beaches. Unlike Skala Beach Resort, you will not find here a lot of sunbeds + parasols on offer. You can however find tavernas on the beach. Perhaps during the peak season there is more to be seen.
Nevertheless, Dutchman and I were looking for a beach to park ourselves for the afternoon, and we have thought of Poros as an option, however, the beach atmosphere here just didn’t seem to get through to us.
So we strolled the promenade a bit and came upon this taverna at the end of the walking path just under the rock cliff. It has a poster of Captain Corelli’s Mandolin movie which was filmed in Kefalonia (Cephallonia). I haven’t seen the movie but Poros is one of the locations and perhaps this taverna as well. If we have stayed longer and eaten a little snack here, I would go to this taverna by the Fotis Family. It has an upper terrace which would give a good view to the beach and the village square.
We lingered further a bit and sat down on a bench, contemplating if we stay here or not for our beach afternoon.
Alas the dice has been cast! We are moving on. We are going to spend our afternoon at our favourite beach in Sami. At the beautiful Antisamos Beach. Gotta hop back on the scooter.
TIP: Skala to Poros is just 12 kilometres along the coastal road.

Poros has white shingle beaches. We have not seen a lot of sunbeds and parasols to let. You might have to bring your own or sit under the shade. The beach tavernas are also an option.
