An Afternoon of Chocolate, Kriek Beer, Waffle and Brussels Scenes

Last October 2013, Miss Luster (a long-time old colleague in Manila who now lives in Dubai) and I met at the Brussels Nord Train Station (the station that gets you to the city centre). She came with the train from Cologne, Germany where she spent a week for work and I came from Utrecht, Netherlands with the car. There is parking across the train station so that was very handy for me. The first thing we did was to catch up with each other over a cup of coffee at the Grand Place | Grote Markt, afterwhich, we did a little stroll and sightseeing before calling for lunch.

After lunch I was in the mood for fresh oysters so we went to St. Catherine’s Square (Sint Katarinaplein | Place de la Catherine), they have a seafood market here every Saturday. Read here: Fresh Oysters at Saint Catherine’s Square

And then we continued with the strolling, sightseeing, cafeing (must in Europe) and tasting all the yummy little things Brussels has to offer on the streets. The centre of Brussels is always a festive place. What can I say, these Belgians know their thing when it comes to the finer things in life.

Miss Luster's chocolate drink with a piece of chocolate. 

My fruity Kriek beer is made from cherries and served with a little chocolate as well on the side. Kriek beer is really a ladies drink and ideally suited for women who are not beer drinkers. Try this when visiting Belgium and your initiation to the world of gastronomic beer will be a smooth and enjoyable experience.

Chocolate, candy, biscuit shops are everywhere in Brussels. A heavenly city if you have a sweet tooth.

Belgian hot waffles with oozing chocolate topping. They also serve other types of toppings such as fruits, nutella, whipped cream, caramel and ice cream.

The bar, rather, beer scene at the Kaasmarkt. 

Gastronomic beer shots if you do not mind. Come to Kaasmarkt to sample them whilst lounging in the outdoor terrace, nipping and people watching.

Belgium has over a hundred varieties of beer, so here is a little piece of advice, drink beer not wine when you are here =).

The biggest park of Brussels across the Royal Palace: Parc Royal | Warandepark. Autumn has been very mild in Belgium, as well as in the Netherlands.

Niemand is illegaal: No one is illegal... a very ideal and humanitarian way of putting things into perspective (i.e. immigration) but only in a perfect world.

We are nearing the end of the day here and our drained faces obviously reflects that it is time to call it a day.

To end our day in Brussels, I was planning on having a glass of wine here at Kwint but the restaurant and bar looks too solemn for my taste so we decided to just head off to the parking place and pick up the car for the drive to the Netherlands.

Brussels is always a delight and always a good idea.
