Kefalonia Island, Greece: Lourdata (Lourdas) and Moussata Villages

For our Greek Island summer holiday last year, Dutchman and I stayed at Lygies Apartments in the village of Moussata in Kefalonia Island (also called Cephallonia). We prefer to stay at local establishments to help support local entrepreneurs and the local tourism industry instead of giving our hard-earned money to the already rich corporations and multinationals.

Moussata is situated beside the more popular and busier Lourdas village which has a beach of its own.

The nearest beach from Moussata is Trapezaki Beach which does not really have any beach facility except for the chic restaurant called Denis where we had dinner one evening after an afternoon on the beach. There are a few restaurants in Moussata but we preferred to see more civilisation so Dutchman and I usually ventured off with our scooter to Lourdas for our evening dinners or night outs. Not that it is very lively here or we go out partying every night, but there are quite a number of restaurants with fantastic views on the main road in Lourdas upper village such as Andromeda Restaurant, La Mer Taverna, Olive Lounge Restaurant and even a few cool bars as well.

There is also a choice of supermarkets and stores here in Lourdas. There are however no ATM’s here. The nearest would be in the capital Argostoli which is 20 minutes away.

For some reason, we did not spend a whole lot of time on Lourdas Beach but we had dinner here one evening at Lorraine's Magic Hill Restaurant which offers the best views in the area. We also had our welcome lunch here at the beach on our first day in the island at Lovidis Taverna.

And oh, we rented our scooter as well in Lourdas, on the main road in the upper village and we booked our boat trip to Ithaca island at the travel agency beside the rental car. So you can do and arrange a lot of things here in Lourdas. Moussata was really a very sleepy village with no central place for locals and visitors to gather together. A scooter or car is really needed if you stay in Moussata.

Lastly, the crowd in Moussata and Lourdas tend to be a bit on the older side, around 40ish and up, which is our age group, although every now and then you can spot a young couple.

MOUSSATA VILLAGE

 We stayed at Lygies Apartments. It is a no frills place but very clean and well maintained. The pool area has spectacular views of the mountains. 

I believe these are almonds. They were growing outside our balcony.

One of the lunches I made at the apartment: grilled courgette, aubergine and peppers, some fresh tomatoes, anchovies in vinegar and fried halloumi cheese.

This is a very nice apartment with lovely hillside views from the spacious poolside terrace. I am paparazzing here =)

Many restaurants in the Greek Islands offer a special Greek Night, usually in the weekend on a Friday or Saturday evening where there will be live Greek music and dancing.

LOURDAS (LOURDATA) VILLAGE

A storm is coming from the mountains. The rain and thunderstorm was rather quick though and after half an hour the skies were blue and the sun was shining again.

Lourdas Beach is not that very busy at all, but this was taken almost at the end of the day. You have to pay for the sunbeds and unbrellas here.

Lorraine's Magic Hill Restaurant has beautiful views of Lourdas Beach. We had dinner here once. Scroll back to my post above for the link to the entry where you can see the pictures.

 

The Astra Cocktail Bar is a nice place to chill for pre or after dinner drinks.

I found this old man sleeping on the terrace from across the Petrol station as we were tanking the scooter. The locals in the island tend to nap a lot outside their balconies you know.
